THE SETTING
The kitchen of a reception hall in a small town in Southwestern Ontario. It’s the kind of all purpose
community hall where you’d have your 4-H banquet, your Stag and Doe, your wedding
reception, and your fiftieth wedding anniversary party. !
This building was erected in the heyday of these community halls: sometime between the late
fifties and mid seventies. The place is of an era and its contents are a hodgepodge of every period
since it was built. It’s still a busy reception hall for events like those in the play, but it’s probably
seen better days.
There is an out-of-date industrial stove, or two mismatched residential ranges side-by-side. There
are a couple of refrigerators, or a fridge and a chest freezer. There’s a big double sink and a large
kitchen island with a stool or two. There are four entrances and exits: the backdoor of building, a
double-swing door that goes directly into the reception hall, a door or corridor that leads to the
rest of the building (the front door, lobby, and washrooms), and this being a comedy, there is a
door to a storage closet.
