Cracks in the Mirror

It’s the morning of the wedding and Ally is excited about her impending nuptials but there is something niggling at her.

She feels so comfortable with Noah; they read the same books, like the same movies. Noah is more like a good mate than a fiancée. But Ally can’t possibly call off the wedding now. Her mother has arranged everything; dresses, photographer, videographer, decorations and a five-tier wedding cake that’s sure to impress.

Her bridesmaids have all arrived and in a few short hours the guests will be here. Maybe a few bottles of champagne and some beef jerky will warm her cold feet!

"Clever, topical storylines, powerful ballads, catchy, toe-tapping tunes, and music that crosses multiple genres and would sit nicely on any Spotify playlist." Stage Whispers.

Plot / Synopsis

Noah has just popped the question, and Ally can’t wait to call the most important people in her life. She calls her mother Astrid, who informs her that she will organise the wedding, and invite her sister Payten, who Ally hasn’t spoken to for many years, to be her bridesmaid. Astrid thinks it will be the perfect opportunity for them to ‘reconnect’.

Ally calls her best friend Candice, who reminds Ally they are non-binary and now goes by the name of Quinn. Quinn is not keen on being a ‘bridesmaid’.  Ally convinces Quinn they have to be in the wedding party and hangs up before they can argue.

Ally then calls her cousin Laura who is six months pregnant, fighting with a mountain of washing, preparing lunches for her five children, all while trying to finish a Theology assessment that is due the next day. Laura is ecstatic about the prospect of a day away from her children and promises to be there (GETTING HITCHED).

30 days later, it is the morning of the wedding. Ally and Laura wake up in a 2 ½ star motel room (booked by Astrid). Laura is excited for the wedding, but Ally seems a little underwhelmed.

Astrid arrives with the wedding dress, that she has spent all night applying the finishing touches.

Ally explains to Laura that Candice came out as Non-binary and now goes by the name of Quinn. Quinn arrives and Laura awkwardly tries to find the appropriate greeting.

Astrid comes back with Payten who has just flown in for the wedding. She is dressed immaculately, makeup and hair perfect. Astrid reveals the bridesmaid dresses which are hideous. She then informs everyone she needs to go and check everything is being prepared for the wedding (MAMMA KNOW BEST).

Laura and Quinn go in search of more champagne and beef jerky, leaving Ally and Payten to argue over the inadequacies of the motel room.
They reflect on their feelings (CRACKS IN THE MIRROR PART 1).

Quinn and Laura return. Ally and Payten argue again, with Ally storming out and Payten retreating to the bathroom. Laura sings about how her life is not as perfect as everyone thinks while Quinn laments their unrequited feelings for Ally (CRACKS IN THE MIRROR PART 2).

Ally and Payten return, and they drink a toast to their ‘perfect’ lives (CRACKS IN THE MIRROR REPRISE 1).

A few hours later, Astrid comes back, in a foul mood. The hairdresser cancelled with Covid! Laura and Payten devise a plan to replace the hairdresser, which involves a suspect ‘hair curler’.

Laura tells Ally that her husband has gone to Bali on a business trip with his secretary. She decides that he must be having an affair.

Ally gets nervous that everything seems to be going wrong and gets (COLD FEET). She takes a walk to clear her head.

Laura counsels Payten on the perils of alcohol and suggests she contact a therapist to talk through her issues (STARING AT SHADOWS).

Ally is feeling nervous about what will happen on her wedding night and confides to Payten and Quinn that she is still a virgin. They all offer Ally advice on how to be a good wife (WHEN YOU TIE THE KNOT).

Astrid takes a call from her secret love (MY BUTTERCUP). Payten and Quinn walk in and catch her in a compromising position. Astrid gets a phone call that completely floors her. She makes some very lame excuse about needing toe clippers, then leaves.

Ally, Payten, Quinn and Laura reminisce about what they wanted to be when they grew up (CLAFOUTIS).
Ally gets changed into her wedding dress and they are all stunned at how beautiful it is.

Astrid comes back and tells Ally she can’t marry Noah. She drops the bombshell; Noah is the baby she gave up when she was 16. Ally tells her mother to leave, then goes in search of Noah.

Payten and Laura argue, and Payten tells Laura ‘there is no God’ (WHO AM I?).

Quinn and Laura discuss Quinns childhood and what led them to come out as non-binary. Ally returns and Quinn suggests they move in together. Ally declines saying she wouldn’t be good company right now (BETTER AS FRIENDS). Quinn’s intense gaze reveals their true feelings to Ally, who, feeling confused, runs off.

Payten apologises to Laura and accepts the number for a therapist.

Ally returns and discusses the ‘moment’ with Quinn. Quinn admits their feelings for Ally, who then tells Quinn she needs to sort out the mess that is her life before she can even think about anything else. Quinn tells her they are happy to remain friends and Ally suggests they be housemates.

Laura gets a call from her husband. He has fired his secretary for coming on to him in the motel room. Laura’s baby kicks for the first time (POLLINATION).

Astrid comes back and explains about her past. (CRACKS IN THE MIRROR REPRISE 2). Ally and Payten say they will forgive her, provided she stop meddling in their lives.
